What Is the Sonablate® 500?

The Sonablate® 500 is a medical device designed to use High Intensity Focused Ultrasound as a treatment for prostate cancer. The device provides a non-invasive treatment option to qualifying prostate cancer patients.

The Sonablate® 500 was developed by Focus Surgery, an Indianapolis based medical device development company. The technology was first developed at Indiana University School of Medicine in the 1970s, and since then it has been developed further in research centers worldwide. International HIFU is the distributor of the Sonablate 500.

This is the only truly non-invasive prostate cancer treatment option, because it does not require patients to undergo a TURP procedure prior to treatment. HIFU treatment with the Sonablate® requires no hospital stay and is done on an outpatient basis.

The Sonablate® gives physicians unprecedented control over HIFU treatment delivery. It also provides real-time images of the prostate gland as the procedure is underway using the same transducer that delivers the treatment. The imaging technology divides the prostate into six treatment zones, two from side to side and three from top to bottom. Each of these six treatment zones will receive customized treatment with HIFU treatment using the Sonablate®, which means the physician can give each patient a customized treatment, providing more effective results.

IMAGE

Prostate cancer treatment using the Sonablate® begins with images gathered via ultrasound. These allow the doctor to plan the treatment using the Simul-Plan Therapy Planning software.

CLICK

Once the treatment has been planned, the physician can select the targeted tissue and simply click the mouse to send the split beam HIFU to the prostate through the same transducer used to capture images.

TREAT

In less than four hours, the prostate gland will be completely destroyed, along with the cancer it contains.
